The design, synthesis and characterization of peptide-based materials is a fast-growing interdisciplinary field of research. It involves the construction and characterization of nanometric architectures through self-assembly of peptide motifs (such as helices, sheets, coiled coils) and the possibility to design and realise new bio-hybrid materials and bio-inspired molecular devices based on functionalized peptide building blocks.
Divided into four sections, the book includes:
- Fundamentals of peptide-based materials: basic chemistry and physics
- Peptide nanostructures: morphology and mechanisms of formation of nanostructures (nanotubes, tapes, fibrils)
- Peptide conjugates and hybrid materials: hybridation of peptides with functional molecules and inorganic substrates
- Applications of peptide-based materials: e.g. antimicrobial materials, semiconductor interactions
The book combines synthetic peptide chemistry, physico-chemical characterization for structural and conformational determinations, computational techniques for molecular modeling, imaging for morphological structures of surfaces, biological expertise for miomolecular utilization and design, and engineering for the realization of peptide-based devices. It is suitable for graduate students and new researchers entering this exciting field of research, whatever their subject background.
