We once thought of them as bigots with bats, roaming the streets with premeditated murder on their minds, dangerous to any member of a targeting group who happened into their path. Now we know from studies of hate crime offenders that the reality is far more subtle, much less identifiable, and much more difficult to treat than previously thought. Iganski (criminology, Lancaster U.) makes good use of his extensive research to develop a more accurate model of offenders that incorporates the fact that most offenders are ordinary people who commit hate crimes within the context of their everyday lives. He connects individual agency with the backgrounds of offenders, taking a victim-centered approach and examining the spatial dimensions of hate crimes within cities and neighborhoods, then describes the relations between liberalism and the criminalization of hate, He advocates, among other recommendations, involving victims in the criminal justice policy process.
