The Encyclopaedia of Islam Three 2011-2

Part of a scholarly project to supplement and update the Encyclopaedia of Islam (now shortened in the supplements to EI), this is the second volume for 2011. Work began on the 3rd edition, or EI three, in 2007, and will continue to be issued every year until complete. The scope of EI three has been significantly expanded from the original encyclopedia to encompass all areas of the world where Islam is a majority or minority religion, and to more fully cover social context and humanistic perspectives. Written by specialists worldwide, the entries of this volume begin with "A" through "C," except for the last four entries: Demak (a town in Java), Expiation (its meaning in philosophy, practice, and Islamic law), Jahangir (the Mughal emperor), and Mas'ud-i Sa'd-i Salman (a Persian court poet). A lengthy entry is included on the architecture of the city of Aleppo, written by noted scholar Yasser Tabbaa, and illustrated with b&w plates of excellent quality.
