Challenging the view that Pushkin rejected drama as political commentary in his effort to modernize Russian theater, Clayton (arts, U. of Ottawa) studies his 1831 play to argue that it reflects Pushkin's ideological views toward the Russian state and revolution even though Boris Godunov is ostensibly about earlier historical events. Drawing on a lexical analysis of his poetic language, Soviet-era and non-Russian criticism, and Pushkin's own critical writings, Clayton makes a case for the "shades" of his title who haunt the protagonists Boris and Alexander representing "overprinted images" of Tsar Alexander I and Napoleon engaged in a power struggle to rule Russia. J. Douglas Clayton is a professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Ottawa. His other works include Wave and Stone: Essays on the Prose and Poetry of Alexander Pushkin (Slavic Research Group, 2000) and Pierrot in Petrograd: Commedia dell'arte / Balagan in Twentieth Century Russian Theatre and Drama (McGill-Queen's University Press, 1994).
