Exploring Globalization Opportunities and Challenges in Social Studies ― Effective Instructional Approaches

Nganga (childhood education, University of Wyoming), Kambutu (educational studies, University of Wyoming), and Russell (social science education, The University of Central Florida) examine global education and how it should be taught in social studies. As social studies education moves into the twenty-first century, they present this volume as both a foundation and a springboard for dialogue, curriculum, scholarship, and pedagogy. Twenty-one chapters are divided into two parts: global issues, trends, policies, practices, and implications; and global issues and innovative instructional practices for teaching global education. Early chapters examine the history, impact, and role globalization has in education, as well as providing help for teachers dealing with immigrant students, and describes the impact of neoliberalism on immigrants. The influence of economic globalization on immigration issues is taken up, as well as a discussion of preparing students and teachers for global citizenship. Part 1 ends with genocide education. Part 2 includes chapters on innovative instructional practices to teaching effectively on specific global issues, e.g., the use of film, blogs, storytelling, and drama, and searches for global connections in local places, and the way to globalize U.S. history, and emphasizes the importance of multiple perspectives. Lydiah Nganga (PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wyoming) is Associate Professor of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the University of Wyoming/Casper College Center. She teaches humanities/social studies methods and other education courses. Dr. Nganga has published two books and has authored/co-authored numerous articles and book chapters.
John Kambutu (PhD in education from the University of Wyoming) is Associate Professor of Educational Studies at the University of Wyoming/Casper College Center. He has published many scholarly articles and book chapters. Dr. Kambutu guest-edited a special issue entitled ?Multicultural Education in an Internationalized/globalized Age? in Multicultural Perspectives: The Official Journal of the National Association for Multicultural Education.
William B. Russell III (PhD in social science education from The Florida State University) is Associate Professor of Social Science Education at The University of Central Florida. He is the editor of the preeminent journal in the field of social studies education, The Journal of Social Studies Research. Dr. Russell has also authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles related to social studies education.
