This volume collects 15 selected papers from the First International Conference of the Society of Jewish and Biblical Studies in Central Europe, held at Pazmany Peter Catholic U., Hungary in February of 2009. The papers explore the way the idea of the "stranger" has been expressed in Jewish tradition from the times of the Old Testament to the Mediaeval period. Topics include the motif of strangeness in the Jephthah-Cycle, the foreigner in Solomon's temple dedication prayer, women as strangers in ancient Judaism, the use of rhetoric in the creation of Rabbinic identity, and the Hannah figure in the Babylonian Talmud.
