I slept most of the way and, as we flew in over the river Thames, I thought: "Well bedown in Heathrow Airport in a couple of minutes. " But I was sitting near the front, andoverheard a conversation going on, between the pilot and a stewardess, something to dowith the undercarriage not coming down properly. The pilot was saying, "Well,go, and take a look," and the stewardess went and looked out of the window, and said : "Icant see it. "
So they made an announcement on the intercom . They said they hada technical fault: one side of the undercarriage hadnt come down, but there were plenty ofthings they could do, and we must not be alarmed. The pilot was quite matter-of-fact aboutit; he was going to fly very low over Heathrow so people below could look up and see whatwas happening. So he did that, and that was rather fun: we went down very low and couldactually, see people looking up at us in the control tower.
By now, all the passengers must have been aware that we were in quite a bit of danger, butit was completely quiet. And since most of us in the first-class cabin were alone, we justlooked at each other sympathetically and made these reassuring faces: "Oh dear, soundsbad," but with this English making-a-joke-of-it sort of thing. I was doing these faces with apleasant-looking middle-aged woman who was sitting about six seats away, and I thoughthow British we were being. When I started talking to her, it turned out she was German. Then I overheard the captain say in a very decisive way: "Well, okay, thats it, Im justgoing to land it. " Shortly after that, he said over the intercom: "Were going to make anemergency landing. " He sounded very calm, very confident. But just at that moment, allthe stewardesses came down the aisles, and they were white-faced; they were clearly veryfrightened. I thought: "Bloody hell, theyve obviously got a much better idea than me ofhow much danger were in. "
