商品簡介

A powerful narrative and visual treatment of the "war to end all wars."

In The First World War in 100 Objects two prominent historians narrate the causes, progress and outcome of the First World War by telling the stories behind 100 items of material evidence of that shattering conflict. From weapons that created carnage to affectionate letters home, from unexpected items of trench decoration to the paintings of official war artists, the objects presented here are as extraordinary in their diversity and story-telling power as they are devastating in their poignancy.

The stuff of battle is here, from the first tanks to the machine guns, from the spades used to dig trenches to battered tins of rations. Iconic objects include the bloodstained tunic of assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and Lawrence of Arabia's Lee-Enfield rifle. There are surprises, too, that reveal personal stories -- a camisole from a survivor of the Lusitania, the bible of a deeply committed pacifist, the secret diary of executed nurse Edith Cavell, the German button given to a British Tommy in no-man's land during the Christmas Truce of 1914. What emerges is a rounded picture of the war as something lived through and died through, not only on the Fighting Front but on the Home Front as well.

The First World War in 100 Objects is published to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the outbreak of World War I and the opening of the Imperial War Museum's First World War galleries. The museum was established in 1917, while the First World War was still being fought, to ensure future generations understood the causes and consequences of war, to collect and display material as a record of everyone's experiences during that war and to remember the men and women who served. The Imperial War Museum is the world's leading authority on conflict and its impact.
