"I believe Susan Sowerbys right-I do that, " said Mrs. Medlock. "Istopped in her cottage on my way to Thwaite yesterday and had a bit oftalk with her. And she says to me, Well, Sarah Ann, she maynt be agood child, an she maynt be a pretty one, but shes a child, anchildren needs children. We went to school together, Susan Sowerbyand me."
"Shes the best sick nurse I know, " said Dr. Craven. "When I findher in a cottage I know the chances are that I shall save my patient."
Mrs. Medlock smiled. She was fond of Susan Sowerby.
"Shes got a way with her, has Susan, " she went on quite volubly."Ive been thinking all morning of one thing she said yesterday. Shesays, Once when I was givin th children a bit of a preach after theydbeen fightin I ses to em all, When I was at school my jography told asth world was shaped like an orange anI found out before I was ten thatth whole orange doesnt belong to nobody. No one owns more than hisbit of a quarter an theres times it seems like theres not enow quartersto go round. But dont you-none o you-think as you own th wholeorange or youll find out youre mistaken, an you wont find it outwithout hard knocks. What children learns from. children, she says, isthat theres no sense in grabbin at th whole orange-peel an all. If youdo youll likely not get even th pips, an thems too bitter to eat."
"Shes a shrewd woman, " said Dr. Craven, putting on his coat."Well, shes got a way of saying things, " endgd Mrs. Medlock, much pleased. "Sometimes Ive said to her, Eh! Susan, if you was adifferent woman an didnt talk such broad Yorkshire Ive seen the timeswhen I should have said you was clever."
