Torp focuses on the effects of early globalization in the mid-nineteenth century German Empire in relation to the economy, society, and politics, and shows how foreign trade policy reacted to the challenges of this novel economic integration, all in the context of a revolution in transport and communication systems. He discusses how, in several decades, globalization reached proportions, in some cases, greater than the present day. There are six chapters: the German Empire in the world economy before 1914; foreign trade policy in the free trade era; the shift towards protectionism; the Caprivi Trade Treaties; the conflict over the Bulow Tariff; German trade policy after the turn of the century. 作者簡介
Cornelius Torp is Lecturer in the Department of History at the Martin Luther University of Halle (Germany). He is the editor of Imperial Germany Revisited: Continuing Debates and New Perspectives (with Sven Oliver Muller, 2011) and the author of Max Weber und die preusischen Junker (1998).?
