E-Political Socialization, the Press and Politics ― The Media and Government in the USA, Europe and China

The editors of this book respond to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation study that showed US youth now spend 12 hours and 20 minutes each day using media (Internet, video games, TV, texting, music players, cell phones, etc.) This is more time than they spend interacting directly with themselves (eating, sleeping, etc.) or others, and a more than 3 hour daily increase since 1999. Other studies show adult trends are the same. One concern is the conversion of access to news and information from editorial selection to popularity calculations. This situation creates majority rule without minority rights and affects the ways marketing controls people's access to information. This book is divided into four parts that explore aspects of how people are socialized politically and how this issue is currently connected to various media. The first part gives background on political socialization. The second looks at media use, government, and websites. The third looks at print press, broadcasting, and politics.
