Historians of Turkey McCarthy, Turan, and Ta<,s>kiran describe how a de facto coalition of Christian missionaries, British Liberal politicians, Armenian revolutionaries, and members of the Armenian diaspora principally from Britain and the US began a campaign to create an independent Armenia in Sasun, a region of eastern Anatolia--today eastern Turkey. Their chief weapon was stories of Muslim Ottoman oppression and massacre of Christian Armenians, and the goal was to convince European powers to intervene against the Ottoman Empire in favor of the Armenians on humanitarian grounds. Reporting on the "Sasun Massacres" marked the beginning of a crusade that was to culminate in portrayals of a genocide of Armenians during World War I, they say. Justin McCarthy?is professor of history at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He has published eleven books, including The Armenian Rebellion at Van (University of Utah Press, 2006) and The Turk in America (University of Utah Press, 2010.)
