Szulakowska, who is not identified, concentrates on the intellectual and spiritual concerns of the 1590s to 1620s using Heinrich Khunrath's Amphiteatrum Sapientae Aeternae (1595, 1609) as a focal point to analyze the rhetorical practices of Paracelsian theosophists, specifically their use of certain types of visual illustration. Finding too many alchemists during the late Renaissance to cover them all, she selects John Dee, Khunrath, Michael Maier, and Robert Fludd as representative. Among her topics are the semiotic structures of Renaissance alchemical images, and the Astral Virtue and the Aerial Salpetre of Paracelsian alchemy. She includes 35 pages of illustrations. 作者簡介
Urszula Szulakowska is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Bretton Hall College (University of Leeds). She has published many scholarly papers on medieval and Renaissance alchemical illustration in journals such asAmbix, Chrysopoeia, Acta Historiae Artium and Cauda Pavonis.
