Written in the early 1730s, Richard Cantillon’s Essay on the Nature of Trade in General is widely recognised as being the first systematic treatise explaining the functioning of a market economy. Here, the text is reproduced verbatim in a uniquely comprehensive critical edition.
The Essay, at the same time as being an undoubted early masterpiece, is also a text with a complex history. Cantillon died under mysterious circumstances in 1734, and since then the work has survived in various manuscript forms. To allow for a comparative study of different versions of Cantillon’s writings, this edition offers an innovative mode of presentation. The verbatim texts are reproduced as they were published in the 1750s, alongside the following: the classic Higgs translation of the French print edition of 1755; variations in manuscripts and other additional sources; and comments by the editor, Richard Van Den Berg. This layout allows easy access to, and comparative study of a large number of text fragments that have until now been difficult to collate.
The fascinating detail of this comparative study raises many new issues in Cantillon studies with regards to the chronology and authenticity of passages and the precise content and evolution of his economic theories. Revealing the layers by which the Essay was built up and the touches added by later editors, this historic critical edition will serve as a landmark publication in the field of Cantillon studies, as well as in the history of economic thought and history of ideas more generally.
