This title is the first volume of the Boeotia Survey's publications, dealing with the landscape that formed part of the territory of the ancient city of Thespiai. Co-authors Bintliff (classical archaeology, Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, The Netherlands), and Snodgrass (classical archaeology, emeritus, U. of Cambridge, UK) have been co-directors of the Boeotia Project since 1979; third co-author Howard (experimental officer, archaeology, U. of Durham, UK) also provides his expertise. Chapter topics include an introduction to the Thespiai South/Leondari Southeast Area as a city and its nearer hinterland; new procedures and objectives; principles of analysis via periodization and statistical weighting; functional analysis; analysis of individual sites; soils of agriculture and potential of the Thespiai area; spatial analysis of Boeotia field-walking survey data; and the distribution, chronology, and function of the sites in their settings.
