Principles of Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging ─ A System Simulation Approach

This book offers in-depth and sufficient broad, step by step, understanding of the influence of system parameters on image quality. Platforms including spacecraft, aircraft, and ground-based (e.g. rail) are covered to take into account the influence of platform motion that is profoundly important for high image quality formation. The book also covers of the wave-target interaction that plays role in information content of the target carried by the SAR image.

Kun-Shan Chen received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1990. Since 1992, he has been with the faculty of the Center for Space and Remote Sensing Research at the National Central University, where he served as Director from 2001-2004 and holds a remote sensing chair professorship since 2008 and has been Director of the Communication System Research Center at the same university. He is awarded a distinguished visiting chair professorship from National United University in Taiwan in 2009 for a 6 years term. He received an outstanding contribution award from Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in 2009 for his long- term involvement of cooperative research on rupture deformation and subsidence in Vietnam. A receipt of distinguished award of National Science Council 2012, his research interests include image processing and analysis of remote sensing data, remote sensing for natural hazards and disasters, and microwave scattering and emission theory and modeling from terrain with applications to environmental watch and resource investigation, and wireless communications. He has been working on SAR and its applications since early 90s.

Currently, he leads a team to build Taiwan’s first airborne SAR system for monitoring natural disasters and supporting fundamental research. He has authored and co authored over 100 referred journal papers, contributed 5 book chapters, and is co-author (with A. K. Fung) of "Microwave Scattering and Emission Models for Users", Artech House, 2010. He serves as a Guest Editor for the IEEE TGARS Special Issue on Remote Sensing for Major Disaster Prevention, Monitoring and Assessment (2007), Proceedings of IEEE Special Issue on Remote Sensing of Natural Disasters (2012), a founding chair of the GRSS Taipei Chapter, an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (2000-2011), as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (2008-2010) in which he is now an associate editor. Dr. Chen is Fellow of IEEE.
