Jennaway (Asian languages and studies, U. of Queensland) applies postmodern feminist theory to this ethnographic study of women in North Bali. The study focuses on three women living in Punyanwangi, a rural village located on the edge of a tourist area, where the author conducted a year's fieldwork in 1992, and later returned briefly in 1999. Jennaway explores a number of aspects of the village's society, including the organization of labor, marriage patterns, tourism, adolescent sexuality, and some specific illnesses of women, all as they relate to the desires of the three women at the center of her study.
