The International Human Right Law Institute began examining the international trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation within a human rights framework in 1998. In 2000, it launched a study on Latin America and the Caribbean, applying theoretical and methodological insights it had gleaned from projects elsewhere and developing new ones for the region when necessary and suitable. Student and volunteer researchers compiled information on trafficking and related practices from over 200 United Nations reports by treaty-monitoring bodies, Special Rapporteurs, and other bodies. After looking at the region as a whole, the report details the situation in eight Central American and Caribbean countries, draws conclusions, and recommends legislative and legal policies.
