It's impossible for any open-minded person to have walked through one of the Occupy sites during the 79 days of the Umbrella Movement, and not be changed by the experience, often deeply so. The sense of life-changing history was constantly palpable. There were moments of high tension and even violence, yes, but for the most part, the Umbrella Movement sweeping Hong Kong in 2014 was one of the most exemplary, civil, peaceful demonstrations in world history.
As Sketchers, whatever our political leanings, we felt powerfully compelled to show history as it unfolded before our eyes. Big stories and small, they all counted for something. You'll see for yourself as you leaf through the pages of this book.
There's something magical about finding a corner, whether in the heat of the action or when overwhelmed by peace and camaraderie, then methodically gearing up to put all of yourself into recording what you see, feel and hear. Because we choose to sketch, we take the time to absorb more of our surroundings. The result is always a fascinatingly unique alchemy of the artist's style, chosen media, emotion and thought. Striving always to be objective, our goal is to tell the story of the time, which in a nutshell, is what urban sketching is all about. Why did we draw the Umbrella Movement? How could we not?
