International Political Sociology ─ Transversal lines

This book engages with contemporary cutting-edge research in international political sociology (IPS). It brings together leading academics from international relations, sociology, social theory, criminology, anthropology, law and the wider social sciences to rethink through the lens of international political sociology standard approaches to international relations. The authors and editors come from diverse intellectual and geographical backgrounds to provide unprecedented coverage of the key concepts and topics of research in IPS.

The volume is split into 4 sections

Part I: Introduces the different intellectual trajectories and brings together the various lines of reasoning that have guided the creation of IPS

Part II: Explores key concepts used in international political sociology to reflect on and analyze international relations

Part III: Questions some of the key building blocks of ‘the international’ by forwarding an international political sociology perspective, bringing together interdisciplinary scholars and investigating areas such as the state, security and citizenship

Part IV: Provides a critical forum on IPS bringing together its protagonists and its critiques, both from inside and outside of International Relations. It consists of three short critiques and a collective response by the editors

This book constitutes the most comprehensive collection available of key debates from key figures in the field. It will be an essential source of reference for students and scholars, exposing the breadth and depth of international political sociology.

Tugba Basaran is lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. She is on the editorial board of Cultures & Conflits, former member of the editorial team of International Political Sociology and former managing editor of Cambridge Review of International Affairs. She is also a member of the International Political Sociology section at the International Studies Association (ISA).

Didier Bigo is Professor at King's College London Department of War studies and MCU Research Professor at Sciences-Po Paris. He is also the director of the center for study of conflicts, liberty and security (c&cls) and editor of the quarterly journal in French Cultures et Conflits published by c&cls and l’Harmattan. He has been the founder and co-editor with Rob Walker of International Political Sociology one of the journals of the International Studies Association published by Wiley Blackwell.

Emmanuel-Pierre Guittet is lecturer in Security and Political Violence Studies at the University of Manchester. He is associate researcher at the Canada Research Chair in Security, Identity and Technology. He is also a member of the International Political Sociology section at the International Studies Association (ISA) and a member of the Critical Approach to Security in Europe network (C.a.s.e. Collective).

R. B. J. (Rob) Walker has been teaching at the University of Victoria since 1980 and is a founding member of the Graduate Program in Cultural, Political and Social Thought. Professor Walker is also the long-term Editor of the journalAlternatives: Local, Global, Political and the founding co-editor, with Didier Bigo, of the International Studies Association journal IPS: International Political Sociology.
