This book provides historical details and critical and cultural analyses of the BBC literary radio program,Caribbean Voices, that was broadcast only to the Anglophone Caribbean from March 11, 1943 until September 7, 1958. Griffith details throughout the book the ways in which this program played a substantive and critical role in the post-war literary efflorescence that established the first-wave canon of Anglophone Caribbean literature. The book argues that one of the literature’s defining features, a focus on orality in poetry, prose fiction and drama, was spurred on, if not actually determined, by the fact that the early literature was voiced over the airwaves.
