Allen, a former publisher who writes about boxing, offers a biography of Jess Willard, the “Pottawatomie Giant,” who was Heavyweight Champion of the World from 1915 to 1919, beating Jack Johnson. He lost to Jack Dempsey in 1919, made a comeback, but was defeated by Luis Firpo in 1923, then retired. The book challenges myths about Willard and his fights related to Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey and details his life from his childhood in Kansas and beginning his boxing career in Oklahoma, to his show business appearances, to his fights. 作者簡介
Arly Allen was president of Allen Press, Inc., a scholarly printer and publisher for many years until his retirement in 1993. He then began research on the early history of boxing and has published a number of articles on boxing. He lives in Lawrence, Kansas.
