Dr Stanislav Shmelev received an MSc in Operations Research in Economics and a PhD in Ecological Economics and Mathematical Methods from St Petersburg State University (European Commission INTAS PhD Fellowship). For the past ten years he has specialised in ecological economics with applications to climate change, macro sustainability assessment, sustainable urban and regional development, input-output analysis, multi-criteria analysis, material flows analysis, lifecycle analysis, issues of sustainable energy and waste management. Dr Shmelev is a Santa Fe Institute (NM) alumnus (2001) and a LEAD Europe Fellow (2007).

In 2008-9 Dr Shmelev was a Senior Researcher at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford. His previous appointments included Visiting Professorships at the University of Geneva (Switzerland), University Paris Dauphine (France), University of Versailles Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines (France). In 2004-2007 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Open University (UK). Dr Shmelev has given invited lectures and seminars in Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and the UK. Dr Shmelev has collaborated with such international organisations as UNEP, IUCN, OECD and numerous universities. Now he is teaching Economics of Europe at Buckingham and is a Research Associate at Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford.
