The author discusses the sociolinguistic development of the Jewish diasporas and how Jewish multilingualism was created and transformed by 2,000 years of exile and diaspora and how it was modified by the return to Jerusalem that reestablished Jewish sovereignty in its original homeland, focusing on the social, political, economic, and religious conditions involved, rather than the modifications of lexicon, morphology, and syntax. He describes language in non-Jewish diasporas, the Jewish community exiled to Babylon, exiles in Muslim and Christian countries in the Middle Ages and later, the diaspora in modern times in various countries, and the problem of returning from diaspora, the revitalization and revernacularization of the Hebrew, and rediasporization. 作者簡介
Bernard Spolsky (Ph.D. 1966, Hon.D.Litt 2008) is Professor Emeritus at Bar-Ilan University. He has published ten monographs (three translated into Japanese, Chinese or Latvian), 150 book chapters and 94 papers in peer reviewed journals, and edited three international academic journals and 26 books.
