During the 1890s and between 1914 and1925, up to 750,000 Assyrians residing in the Ottoman Empire, but probably more like 250,000, perished in a genocide that has come to be known as the label "Seyfo". In contrast to the genocide against Assyrians, the massacre of up to 1.5 million By contrast, the genocide of Armenian residents of the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1920 did achieve international acknowledgement and recognition.
This book explores the reasons why remembrance of the Seyfo was long suppressed, and the role played by governments and scholars in the 1915-2005 period. It will consider the ways in which the descendants of survivors and scholars have excavated memories of the event while attempting to reflect on the wider question of the role that scholarship plays in the remembrance (or suppression) of episodes of genocide.
