This accessible, chronological account explores political and social factors surrounding the evolution of Irish-American nationalism and Irish identity in Boston during the period before and after WWI, looking especially at the role of the Catholic Church and the impact of the Easter Rising of 1916. The author explores the effect of Irish ethnic nationalism on Irish-Americans' relationships with 'Yankees.' There is also discussion of Catholic doctrine and Catholic social justice, the impact of fears of communism, and new conceptions of the rights of immigrants and workers.
