In 1954, a massive irradiated dinosaur emerged from Tokyo Bay and rained death and destruction on the Japanese capital. Since then Godzilla and other monsters, such as Mothra and Gamera, have gained cult status around the world. This book provides a new interpretation of these monsters, or kaiju, and their respective movies. Analyzing Japanese history, society and film, the authors demonstrate various ways in which this monster cinema tackles environmental and ecological issues—from nuclear power and industrial pollution to biodiversity and climate change.
作者簡介
Sean Rhoads is a film historian, Japanologist, and lifelong monster cinema aficionado. He has taught courses on East Asia at Philadelphia University and Alvernia University and has published work on Godzilla and environmentalism in G-Fan magazine, and presented lectures on Japanese monster cinema at G-FEST and academic conferences. He lives in Kemptville, Ontario. Brooke McCorkle is a music historian, Japanologist, and double bassist. She is currently a visiting assistant professor of musicology at the State University of New York at Geneseo. In addition to numerous academic presentations, she has published her work on music and film in edited volumes, Oxford Bibliographies Online, Horror Studies, and the Journal of Fandom Studies. She lives in Rochester, New York.
