This study examines the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of morphological and periphrastic or analytic causative constructions in Hausa, a Chadic/Afroasiatic language spoken in Western Africa. Covering aspects of interest to both typologists and theoretical linguists, the book offers an account of the differing linguistic expressions of causal situations in Hausa. The book begins with a summary of properties of direct versus indirect causatives cross-linguistically, then presents new findings on a range of morphological causative formations in Hausa, focusing on deadjectival and denominal verbs.
