商品簡介

Arguing that military strategies of attrition have been equally as effective in modern warfare as other strategies, yet have received relatively less attention from military historians, Malkasian (of the U.S. Government-funded Center for Naval Analyses) seeks to analyze the strategic thought of the military commanders, theorists, and political leaders who have been its proponents. Focusing only on those cases where attrition was the explicit intention of a commander, he explores why attrition has been implemented, what its goals have been, and how it has been formulated in order to attain those goals. Although the study covers warfare from 1789 to 1991, particular emphasis has been placed on the Second World War and the Cold War. Malkasian identifies attrition as being an integral part of both strategies of annihilation (first articulated by Napoleon) and wars of limited aims (as described by Clausewitz). As is to be expected from military consultants to the U.S. government, Malkasian pays particular attention to the use of air power in the strategy of attrition. Annotation c.
