On 18. May 1944, the Wehrmacht finally lost the battle of Monte Cassino: After almost six months of intense warfare, the Allies captured the "Wellenbrecher Cassino", as German propaganda named it, and were afterwards advancing on Rome. Due to Goebbel's skilful propaganda, the name "Monte Cassino" is still to this day associated with a last German defence victory rather than a lost battle in both academic and non-academic circles. In his book, Magnus Pahl questions the myth regarding Germany's combat power at Cassino. In this context, he also highlights the multinational forces of the Allies, among which the Polish contingent and the one from New Zealand played a special role. The volume is accompanied by a preface by Polish military historian Zbigniew Wawer.
