Before Norman Rockwell put paintbrush to canvas, he had a precise idea of what he wanted to create. A perfectionist and analytical thinker, Rockwell completed numerous preparatory drawings before arriving at the final composition for his paintings, much like the Old Masters long before him. He worked in several stages, including thumbnail sketches, reference photographs, and studies of particular details--culminating in a highly meticulous tonal drawing to be traced onto canvas. It was rare that anything would change between this last sketch and the final painting. The drawings, many of them never before published, offer a unique glimpse into the creative process of one of America's most celebrated artists.
This book includes over one hundred illustrations; the first part contains sequences of preliminary drawings and finished works, such as covers for the Saturday Evening Post, while the second part comprises drawings intended as standalone works, including illustrations for classic novels, illustrated letters that he drew for his family and friends, comics, and caricatures. The text, by curators at the Norman Rockwell Museum, describes the subtle and dramatic changes from the first draft to final version, and the artist's mastery of capturing light, shadow, and the details of daily life.
This book, which will accompany a forthcoming exhibition at the Norman Rockwell Museum, is a must-have reference for illustrators and for all Americana enthusiasts.
