between two camps: his defenders and detractors. The critical views of his defenders
are generally appreciative to the point of being tendentiously celebratory of Naipaul's
claim to objective truth and universality of vision. Those of his detractors are directed
against his unabashed commitment to Enlightenment ideologies that, according to
them, lie beneath the racialist-imperialist narrativity of Naipaul's travel accounts of
the Third World countries. Naipaul's admirers lay emphasis on his broad satire and
melancholy experience of humanity in post-colonial societies.
