In this dissertation, I defend what Kant called "the old formula of the schools", quidquid appetitur, appetitur sub specie boni- everything that is desired, is desired under the guise of the good. In other words, to have a desire, or intention or other practical attitude, entails that the agent takes the content of that attitude to be good. It is difficult to assess the received philosophical view on this thesis, as both defenders and detractors tend to cast themselves as underdogs going against the prevailing philosophical orthodoxy. Still, the Guise of the Good has certainly had some notable recent support.1 However, most of the arguments offered in favor of the view have been defensive-trying to show how the thesis can overcome various counter-examples and other challenges, and relying on the presumed intuitive plausibility of the thesis to provide the positive argument in its favor. This strategy strikes me as incomplete, and so I aim to provide a positive argument for the Guise of the Good that does not rely on its intuitive appeal.
