Evolution and Ecology of Macaque Societies
90折
作者:John E. Fa  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:2005/11/17 裝訂:平裝
The genus Macaca is the most widely distributed of non-human primates and is found in 20 countries in South-East Asia and North Africa. Over the comparatively short time span of 5 million years, macaques have evolved diverse forms, from long-tailed arboreal types to robust terrestrial animals, and inhabit a variety of habitats. Although macaques are probably one of the most studied monkeys both in the wild and in captivity, data from long-term studies and pioneering work on little-known species are only just emerging. In this 1996 book, world authorities on macaques interpret research and present syntheses of many aspects of macaque ecology, evolution, behaviour and conservation. This book will prove to be the definitive synthesis of the subject for all those interested in this fascinating group of monkeys for many years to come.

Brazil and the Struggle for Rubber
90折
作者:Warren Dean  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:2002/04/01 裝訂:平裝
Brazil once enjoyed a near monopoly in rubber when the commodity was gathered in the wild. By 1913, however, cultivated rubber in South-east Asia swept the Brazilian gathered product from the market. In this innovative study, Warren Dean demonstrates that environmental factors have played a key role in the many failed attempts to produce a significant rubber crop again in Brazil. In the Amazon attempts to shift to cultivated rubber failed repeatedly. Brazilian social and economic conditions have been blamed for these failures, in particular the failure of local capitalists and the refusal of the working class to accept wage labour. Dean shows in this study, however, that the difficulty was mainly ecological: the rubber tree in the wild lives in close association with a parasitic leaf fungus; when the tree was planted in close stands, the blight appeared in epidemic proportions.
