The author of the standard early twentieth-century textbook on fossil plants, A. C. Seward (1863–1941) was Professor of Botany at Cambridge, Master of Downing College and Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University. This account of his first research trip to Greenland is an evocative portrait of the country, its immense and sublime landscape, its people, and life on the Danish scientific station. This little book, written in an engaging conversational tone, conveys Seward's enthusiasm for Greenland. It includes an explanation for non-specialists of some of Seward's findings relating to fossil plants found there, which provide evidence that the country had a much milder climate in previous geological periods. Seward's own photographs are a fascinating record of the traditional life of the Inuit population as it then survived, as well as the rugged scenery of icebergs and glaciers.

Based on the author's life, this story describes a time when Kristen Balouch and her family helped remedy deforestation by planting 1,000,000 trees (yes, it's true!) in British Columbia. When Kristen was 10-years-old she and her sisters came home from school one day to be told by their parents that they were going on a trip to plant trees. They flew from their home in California to British Columbia and joined a crew hired by the Canadian government to replace trees that had been cut down by loggers. They set up camp along a river and lived in a tent. Her mother was the cook, her father planted saplings with the crew, and Kristen helped them both. When they were done, everyone was covered in mud, scratches, and bug bites, but they were happy because they did it--they planted one million trees. Forty years later, Kristen took her children back to see the now grown trees at the site where so much had been accomplished all those years ago. Through an engaging text and vibrant art, we join

In 1911, Francis Kingdon Ward (1885–1958) set off on his first solo expedition and collected hundreds of plant species, many previously unknown. From Burma, he headed into the Hengduan Mountains of north-western Yunnan province, exploring along the Mekong, Yangtze and Salween rivers in the region between eastern Tibet and western Sichuan. In 2003, this area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the world's most biodiverse temperate zones, its extraordinary topography arises from its position at the collision point of tectonic plates. This fascinating book, first published in 1913, was one of the most popular by a prolific author. It is generously illustrated with Kingdon Ward's own photographs and maps from the trip. The blue poppy of the title is Meconopsis speciosa, which Kingdon Ward described as the 'Cambridge blue poppy'; rather than the famous 'Tibetan blue poppy' (Meconopsis betonicifolia) that he later brought to England.
