Lucretius' didactic poem On the Nature of Things is one of the great works of Latin literature, and Lachmann's edition of the work from 1850 is often considered the beginning of modern textual criticism. The poem is divided into six books and leans heavily on Epicurean philosophy. All that exists in the world, even the soul, is composed of atoms that unite and dissipate with time; Lucretius does not believe in an afterlife or in any of the Roman gods. Lachmann defines the editorial principle that agreement in error implies identity of origin, and on this basis he creates a stemma for the manuscripts of Lucretius, and demonstrates how the three main manuscripts all derive from one archetype. His commentary is divided into two parts: the recensio (creation of a family tree for the manuscripts of the work) and a lengthy emendatio (correction of the errors in the text).
August Schleicher (1821–1868) is often credited with being the first scholar to apply a 'family tree' model to language groups, and with taking an evolutionist approach to language even before Darwin published On the Origin of Species. Schleicher had published extensively on individual European languages, notably the first formal description of Lithuanian, by the time his ground-breaking comparative Indo-European Compendium appeared in 1861–1862. This book was derived from his lectures, and was intended to save his students note-taking and copying from the blackboard. He devoted a large amount of time to the study of géognosie, the science of the origin and distribution of minerals and rocks forming the earth, later known as geology. In 1805, Humboldt published his first impressions of volcanoes and earthquakes in the Americas in his Personal Narrative. In this 1826 work, he makes the first systematic attempt to compare the rocks of the Old and New Worlds. This groundbreaking analysis became one of the most important geological works of its time.
