Ukrainian-born Madame Helena Blavatsky (1831–1891) was a co-founder of the theosophy movement in the United States, which she later extended to Europe and India, though her later years were dogged by ill health and controversy. These controversies have such great resonance because they put pressure on a cultural identity made possible by, and inseparable from, the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework. Hong Kong is also a city synonymous with film, ranging from commercial gangster movies to the art cinema of Wong Kar-wai. This book argues that while the importance of constitutional controversies for the process of self-formation may not be readily discernible in court judgments and legislative enactments, it is registered in the diverse modes of expression found in Hong Kong cinema. It contends that film gives form to the ways in which Hong Kong identity is articulated, placed under stress, bolstered, and transformed in light of disputes about the nature and meaning of the city's constitutional documents.

The great territorial acquisitions made by the British in South India at the end of the eighteenth century called for an administrative system differing in many ways from that in use in Bengal. These changes influenced subsequent administrative practice not only in Madras but in the whole of British India. Although it had long been recognised that Thomas Munro was in part responsible for the changes, this was the first full study of how his ideas developed and how much they were his alone. Dr Beaglehole's study added greatly to the knowledge of the personality and ideas of one of the key figures in British India. Samuel Clarke was by far the most gifted and influential Newtonian philosopher of his generation, and A Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God, which constituted the 1704 Boyle Lectures, was one of the most important works of the first half of the eighteenth century, generating a great deal of controversy about the relation between space and God, the nature of divine necessary existence, the adequacy of the Cosmological Argument, agent causation, and the immateriality of the soul.
