Its preface is by Robert A. M. Stern, one of the most widely respected architects in the world. And an historical essay was contributed by Frances Halsband, the first woman president of the Architectural League in New York and the first woman dean of Pratt Institute's School of Architecture.
The forty designers and architects profiled in the book were selected through a national competition. Brief essays explain the philosophy and outline the background of each honored subject, and nearly 400 color photos portray the essence of their most notable work.

BEVERLY RUSSELL, as the former editor in chief of Interiors magazine ind editorial director of Architecture
magazine, Beverly Russell has consistently supported the search for new talent in architecture and design.
Russell was born and educated in London and worked as a newspaper reporter for several newspapers on Fleet Street, the city's famed hotbed of journalism.
After immigrating to the United States in 1967, she held a series of editorial posts with leading consumer and trade magazines covering the design field, including House Beautiful, House & Garden, Interiors, and Architecture.
In 1991, she founded Beverly Russell Enterprises, a consulting firm that provides a conduit for her talents as an international journalist, author, and lecturer.
40 UNDER 40 is one of several books Russell has written. Her other titles include Designers' Workplaces, Architecture and Design 1970-1990: New Ideas in America, and Women of Design.
In 1990, the Institute of Business Designers acknowledged Russell's impact on the profession by granting her its highest honor — the Star Award. In 1994, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for her contribution to design education.
A resident of New Paltz, New York, Russell is widely recognized as an influential roving ambassador for the fields of design and architecture.
