The text of this volume is that of Bacon's second revised and enlarged edition of 1625. Of all his works, Bacon's Essays are the best introduction both to his wide interests and his moral outlook. The Essays were long thought to be only peripheral to Bacon's main work. Following the author's own description of the two earlier editions as 'recreations of my other studies', many critics held that the Essays formed no essential part of his work. Adifferent view now prevails. The Essays were intended to supply many of the deficiencies in the 'moral and civil knowledge' of men as individuals and in society which Bacon indicated in the second book of the Advancement of Learning, especially in the most neglected part of civil knowledge, that concerning negotiation or business.
The Essays consist, for the most part, of reflections and generalizations, together with extracts from ancient writers and examples drawn from the author's own experience, woven into counsels for the successful conduct of life and the management of men.
