Aerial transportation came into its own during the Second World War and has played an ever-increasing role in international warfare ever since. The ability to move troops, military equipment and supplies quickly to trouble-spots around the globe is now a basic requirement for the world's major air forces, rather than a desirable luxury.
In order to deal with many `brush fire' situations, speed of response was a growing military requisite. Sea power would always be necessary for heavy equipment, but it was in nipping situations in the bud, or in trying to restore deteriorating war situations, that the bulk air lift came into its own.
On the last day of July 1950, Lieutenant General Gordon Saville called a meeting at USAF HQ in Washington DC to discuss how best to implement the speedy introduction into service of new types of military combat aircraft to address the issue.
The story of the C-130 Hercules had begun with the mighty aircraft continuing to undertake various roles from maritime patrol, earth survey, troop and emergency Medevac delivery to nocturnal low-visibility and secret missions into enemy territorial air space.
Still in worldwide service, historian Peter C Smith pays tribute to the many guises of this legendary aircraft.

Peter Charles Horstead Smith was born at North Elmham, Norfolk in 1940 and was educated at Hamonds School, Swaffham. He was editor at Balfour Books, Cape Sun, World War II Investigator and Publications Co-ordinator at RSPB, Sandy, Beds.
Author of seventy-five published books, mainly aeronautical, military and naval history, Peter's books have been published worldwide including the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malta, Russia, and the United States. He is an acknowledged historian on the subject of dive-bombing.
Peter has two grown-up children, Paul David and Dawn Tracey and lives in a small Bedfordshire village with his wife Pat. His favourite pastimes are world-wide travel; walking; London Theatre and the music of Frank Sinatra. Details of all his books can be found on his web site www.dive-bombers.co.uk.
