Europe (and the United States) has turned in recent years to a racist and criminalized response to immigrants and other marginalized groups (such as the Roma), argues Palidda (U. of Genoa, Italy), who presents 15 papers exploring different aspects of this turn and its impact on society. Country case studies are presented on the criminalization and victimization of immigrants in German, France, Spain, and Italy and topical chapters are presented on the connections between immigration policy and racial profiling, punishment of minors in England, the use of gender and culture to shape difference, control practices and media discourse on immigration, the detention regime, the criminalization of the Roma in neoliberal Europe, and US penal policy. Salvatore Palidda is Professor of Sociology at the University of Genoa, Italy. He is the author of many publications on migrations and social control, and since 1995 has directed a number of European projects related to the themes explored in this book. His most recent book (co-edited with Alessandro Dal Lago) is Conflict, Security and the Reshaping of Society: The Civilization of War (2010).
