A New Social Contract in a Latin American Education Context is committed to what has become known as “perspective of the South:” understanding the South not as a geographical reference but as a vindication of the existence of ways of knowing and of living which struggle for their survival and for a legitimate place in a world where the respect for difference is balanced with the right for equality. The metaphor of the new social contract stands for the desire to envision another world, which paradoxically cannot but spring out of the entrails of the existing one. Could the same contract under which the colonial orders were erected serve as a tool for decolonizing relations, knowledge, and power? Consequently, what kind of education could effectively help structure a new social contract? These are some of the questions Streck addresses.
作者簡介
Danilo R. Streck is Professor at the Graduate School of Education at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos –UNISINOS in Brazil. His graduate studies were carried out at Princeton Theological Seminary and at Rutgers University/. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Siegen (Germany), University of Toronto (Canada), and Universidad Javeriana (Colombia), and visiting scholar at the Latin American Center at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Among his previous books are Correntes Pedagogicas: uma abordagem interdisciplinar; Pedagogia no encontro de tempos: ensaios inspirados em Paulo Freire; Educacao para um novo contrato social; Rousseau & Educacao; and Jose Marti & Educacao. He organized a collectanea of pedagogical texts of Jose Marti, Educacao em Nossa America UNIJUI and coordinated the Project of the Dicionario Paulo Freire. He is editor of the International Journal of Action Research.
Vitor Westhelle is Professor of Systematic Theology at Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
