The Demographics of Empire examines the multifaceted nature of the colonial science of demography over the last two centuries. The essays address how historians, demographers, and other social scientists under-stood colonial population; what the demographic realities of African societies were and how they affected colonial systems of power; and finally, how demographic theories that developed in Europe shaped colonial policies and administrative structures.
Together the contributors question demographic orthodoxy, and in particular the assumption that African societies in the past exhibited a single demographic regime characterized by high fertility and high mortality.
