Treasures of American and English Painting and Decorative Arts: From the Julian Wood Glass Jr. Collection

An important catalog of one of the preeminent collections of British and American art. This volume highlights 126 of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley’s outstanding examples of English and American paintings and decorative arts. Julian Wood Glass Jr. (1910–1992) created this distinctive collection to furnish his living quarters, particularly his ancestral home Glen Burnie Historic House in Winchester, Virginia. Among its treasures are stunning eighteenth-century British portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Gainsborough, and George Romney, American paintings by Rembrandt Peale, John Singleton Copley, and William Merritt Chase, antique English and American silver and furniture, including outstanding objects by the Seymour family of Boston and a couch owned by Queen Charlotte of England. The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, located in Winchester, Virginia, is a dynamic new museum complex designed by Michael Graves & Associates. In addition to housing a remarkable collection of American and European fine arts, the museum also celebrates the historic Shenandoah Valley region.

William Keyse Rudolph, PhD, is the curator of American art at the Worcester Art Museum. He is a specialist in the art of the American South, and has authored several books. Alexandra Alevizatos Kirtley is the Montgomery-Garvan Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her publications include exhibition catalogs and she contributes to Antiques and other magazines.
