Culturally Considerate School Counseling: Helping Without Bias

"Cultural competence" has become the standard for all health and mental health professions. Cultural competence is essential to proficient clinical work with individuals whose heritage, culture, ethnicity, environmental, and socio-economic status is dissimilar to our own. This book identifies the continued biases dividing our classrooms and schools, explores how they manifest in this age of change, and provides specific strategies for school counselors and other professional helpers within school communities.

Twelve chapters grouped into four sections will 1) identify student populations who may be seen, even heard, but seldom considered, such as those with different spiritual beliefs and body types, 2) specify examples of each, 3) illustrate interventions via case vignettes and strategies from conventional and adjunct theories, and 4) support the need for self-reflection, self-care, and professional growth of school counselors, social workers, and psychologists.

In addition to examples and multiple suggestions for each, resources and useable references will also be included. The book culminates with a paradigm adapted from the author's work with Bonnie Davis.
