Drawing on 30-plus years of experience teaching geology, physical science, and English at Hagerstown Community College, retired academic Means offers educators, students, and general readers a guide to the best geological features found inside and outside the Beltway, in 35 road guides describing the landforms and rocks visible from a car window, along bike paths, and at nearby waysides and parks. The text includes an introductory overview of key geologic concepts and the geographic history of Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, DC; sections covering the Allegheny Plateau, Valley and Ridge and Blue Ridge Provinces, Piedmont Province, and Coastal Plain; and a glossary of terms. Each section opens with a general description of the area's geological features, followed by detailed road guides for routes in the area. John Means taught geology, physical science, and English at Hagerstown Community College for more than thirty years before retiring in 2005. He is the author of Maryland’s Catoctin Mountain Parks and enjoys hiking, camping, and canoeing with his family. Suzannah Moran, a geography professor at Hagerstown Community College, teamed up with her husband, Matthew Moran, a visual arts teacher at Seneca Valley High School, to create the maps.
