Racialized Schools ─ Understanding and Addressing Racism in Schools

While racism continues to be a persistent and pervasive issue in our schools, the professionals charged with creating safe and nurturing educational environments have few resources availble to address racism directly. As its title suggests, Combating Racism will be the first book of its kind to do just that. A qualitative survey of students, school counselors, teachers, and administrators sets the stage by providing the readers with a 360 degree picture of today's schools and the many ways racism creeps into the lives of our students. The authors then present a number of different models and perspectives on understanding and addressing racism, beginning with their own personal and professional experiences. This book will appeal directly to school counselors as not only a comprehensive look at racism within our schools, but as a practical tool to use in implementing preventative measures to combat racism directly.

Jesse A. Brinson, EdD, is a professor of counselor education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and specializes in understanding race and racism in U.S. society. Dr. Brinson’s scholarship is published in major counseling journals and seeks to help U.S. citizens develop non-racist self-identities. He is the recipient of the Rosa Parks faculty award for pursuing a career in higher education.

Shannon D. Smith, PhD, is a professor of counselor education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor in Nevada and Ohio. His current research and practice interests include multicultural issues, advocacy for underrepresented groups, and racial conflict resolution in schools and communities. He has published numerous refereed journal articles, book chapters, and scholarly works and has served on various state and national associations, as well as editorial boards, including the Journal of Counseling & Development.
