Mountain Resorts: Ecology and the Law

Milne (Vermont Law School) et al. compile case studies of four mountain resorts in the US and Canada to consider whether the law protects the ecological systems of mountains from their adverse impacts. Ecologists and lawyers from the US, Canada, and Norway provide 23 chapters on Loon Mountain, New Hampshire; Whiteface Mountain Ski Center, New York; Killington Resort, Vermont; and Mount Tremblant, Quebec. Chapters examine federal and state laws on land use, planning, permitting, environmental impact assessment, expansion, negotiated agreements, private land trusts, and other issues. The first section introduces the ecosystem approach to understanding the effects of mountain resorts, and discusses plant communities and vegetation processes, water quantity and quality, and effects on wildlife.
