Both now retired from the University of Reading, Barber (Medieval history) and Bate (classics) have assembled letters not previously published in English, or those in archaic and inaccessible translation. The arrangement is chronological rather than thematic, but they have made an effort to provide a representative picture of what was happening in Syria and Palestine over the two centuries of war and occupation 1095-1312. For each of the 82 letters, they cite sender and intended recipient and identify them if necessary, date as accurately as possible, number and location of manuscript or edition, text, and notes on people and events mentioned.
