Defining Civil and Political Rights: The Jurisprudence of the United Nations Human Rights Committee

The United Nations Human Rights Committee is an independent and quasi- judicial international body established under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This work is an examination and commentary on the jurisprudence of the Committee with regard to decisions and comments on the substantive rights and freedoms set out in Parts I and II of the Covenant. Separate chapters cover procedure under the Optional Protocol; limitations to and derogations from Covenant rights; democratic and civil rights; security of the person; the judicial process; privacy, honor, and reputation; rights of the family and children; self-determination; minority rights; and equality and non-discrimination. Covering the jurisprudence from the establishment of the Committee through the conclusion of its 92nd session in April 2008, it is intended to serve as a reference point for civil and political rights practitioners, judiciary, and academics.
